The Top 6 Boudoir Photography Misconceptions Photographers Always Hear

Trust me, if you’re feeling nervous about diving into a Houston boudoir photography session, I totally get it. Taking off your clothes for a stranger to photograph? Seems a little weird! But let me assure you that every woman in the images wowing you across my website had to shake off those same nerves you’re navigating!

I’ve found that the first step toward shaking the pre-session nerves is to dig candidly into the most common misconceptions surrounding the boudoir photography world. Today, let’s bust a few myths, shall we? Come on!

Misconception #1:

You need to be in a relationship or a bride-to-be to get boudoir photos

Reality: Anyone can take boudoir photos—you don’t need someone to give them to!

Don’t let not having a partner to give your photos hold you back from getting confidence-boosting boudoir photos taken. You don’t need anyone to share your photos with anyone else, so don’t even think twice about this misconception!

While boudoir photos are often used as a pre-wedding gift, they certainly don’t need to be the only time these photos are taken. Whether you’ve been married for 20 years or 2, boudoir photos are a great gift for your spouse. Or, just for yourself!

It’s no secret that our bodies change as we age, and if you haven’t yet had the experience of looking back on high school photos when you thought you didn’t look so hot and thinking, “What was that crazy, gorgeous girl thinking!?” it’ll happen! And it’ll happen again and again and again as we continue through the journey of life. Preserve the beauty of right now so you can look back on it when you’re old and gray.

And if you want to really get fun with it, invite some of your girlfriends along for the fun! Who needs a guy when you can have a fun photo shoot with all of your best friends?

Let’s start thinking about boudoir photography differently.

Misconception #2: You need to lose weight before doing a boudoir photography session

Reality: Come as you are, and let my posing expertise take care of the rest.

There is a single freaking reason to change your body before a boudoir session—and I mean Not. One. Reason! The real magic of boudoir is found in unleashing your inner confidence and seeing yourself as the stunning, sexy goddess you are! As you are. Right now. Today. I promise you will look sexy and beautiful for the camera. You don’t have to change a thing!

I’m also a pro at posing you so that those perceived imperfections are deemphasized while we shine a light on the qualities you’re most proud of! We all have insecurities, and it’s totally okay to be honest with me about that. But my favorite moments always happen when a client goes from “can we hide my lack of a butt” to “OMG, that’s MY butt!? It looks freaking incredible!” So, you just might surprise yourself. Be open to the unexpected!

Most of all, never be afraid to share insecurities with me openly, and I’ll find a way to help you through it.

Misconception #3: You need to know how to pose and “be sexy” to take boudoir photos

Reality: I show you how to pose, so you’ll always look your best!

If I told all my clients that they need to know how to pose before signing up for a boudoir session…my client calendar would be home to nothing but those Looney Tunes tumbleweeds.

Trust me; you don’t need to know a thing about posing or “being sexy” to book a boudoir photography session. Simply come as you are, and don’t worry about practicing any mirror poses beforehand (although I won’t stop you if you want to give your best Tyra Banks smize a try the night before!)

I’ll tell you exactly how to pose and even show you some of the poses so you can copy what I’m doing. Yeah, get ready to laugh! And if I do a pose that you don’t feel comfy with? No problem at all; let’s skip ahead to the next one! Your comfort is my number one priority.

Misconception #4: You need to be confident wearing just your undies for the camera

Reality: You can wear a more modest look or bring options to change into as you start feeling more confident.

With me, it’s not necessary to bare-all for a showstopping boudoir session. In fact, many of my clients opt for something a little more modest or start with a robe on and then take it off as they feel more comfortable! You can wear a slip dress or even go for something a little different, like an oversized jersey or his favorite suit jacket. Ooooh, spicy spicy! Let’s experiment with some different outfits so you don’t need to stress about stripping all the way down!

If you would rather go for a more modest look, consider bringing a lingerie set to change into once you start feeling more confident! I promise the moment will come!

Misconception #5: Boudoir photography is too expensive

Reality: I offer a wide range of packages so you can adjust to something that fits your financial needs!

Sure, some photographers have super pricey packages. But I aim to make confidence-boosting boudoir photography accessible to everyone, so I offer a variety of lower-cost packages that will make boudoir much more in-reach. You don’t need to shell out thousands of dollars to get the boudoir photography experience you deserve.

Misconception #6: The photos will get posted on the internet

Reality: I always ask permission before posting photos online.

I take privacy very seriously, so you can trust that I won’t share any photos online if you’re uncomfortable with it! I always ask my clients beforehand if I can share their images for marketing purposes, so don’t stress. Just let me know that you want your photos private, and your eyes will be the only ones on them!
